Our 2017 in Review
December 2017 saw us complete DN Journals' 2nd year of operations. The time has gone unbelievably quickly, and we couldn’t be happier with how the company has grown and established itself within the academic publishing services field. On launching the company one of our goals was to have clients on both sides of the publishing process, using our skills and expertise to work with academics and the journal industry. We endeavour to be involved with projects spread across all aspects of research publishing in order to continue our learning and development in what is an ever-changing field. In this respect we have certainly achieved our aims. During 2017 we worked with large, small and independent publishers, learned societies, universities and individual academics, and Duncan continued his roles on the Council for European Association of Science Editors (EASE), and the conference organising committee for International Society of Managing and Technical Editors (ISMTE).
Our work during 2017 saw us setting up new journals, creating and interpreting subscriber and editorial board surveys, carrying out day-to-day peer review admin, managing the transfer of large data sets to new editorial systems, assessing and setting up online journal subscription systems, carrying out large scale journal development reviews, conducting marketing research and content development, creating RFPs and managing the sale of independent journals, helping journals increase their Web of Science and SCOPUS rankings, managing and setting up editorial boards, and solving index-database issues. Our Training division has continued to grow throughout 2017. We have had the pleasure of training academics at universities across the UK, in China and most recently Nigeria. Researchers have attended our full day Author Workshops, sessions on Peer Review, Social Media for Researchers, Open Science, and Journal Metrics. In addition to university visits we have been writing and recording eLearning scripts on topics such as research writing, choosing journals and article preparation, publishing ethics, and peer review. We have been privileged to be involved with the development and recording of the Publons Peer Review Academy, and delivering in-person workshops to complement the online course. Since its launch in May, the Academy has already helped many young researchers establish themselves in the peer reviewing communities of their subject areas. Publons themselves had a successful year, winning the ALPSP award for innovation, being acquired by Clarivate and integrating Publons tools with ScholarOne, making 2018 an exciting year with huge potential for them. 2017 cemented our understanding of where we sit within the publishing services field. As well as being experts on the consultancy side of Journal Development, our USP is that we can then perform any of the work recommended as a result of Development Reviews. By continuing to take on development tasks, peer review admin and other editorial roles we are able to see our clients achieve their goals and get results in many aspects of their action plans. The end of 2017 saw us move into our newly built office which will allow us to expand our editorial capabilities as we look to begin adding new faces to the DN Journals family. We also managed to attend some incredibly interesting (and entertaining) conferences throughout the year, including the World Conference on Research Integrity, INASP Publishers for Development, and most recently SpotOn17. But our conference schedule was dominated by Duncan chairing the organising committee for the ISMTE meeting in November, which all came together as successfully as we could have hoped. Duncan will be chairing the Committee again for the 2018 event, as well as adding the organisation of the 14th EASE Conference in to our calendar too. The final crowning achievement of the year, is Duncan’s appointment as Vice-President of The European Association of Science Editors. We are delighted to announce this news, and look forward to his continuing role with EASE in this new capacity – bringing more resources and events to members in-person, and through the website. We would like to thank all of our clients that we worked with in 2017 and look forward to what 2018 has in store.
